A home in the Sunrise Heights section of Fort Ashby was destroyed in a Saturday night fire that began in an attached garage. Fort Ashby Fire Deputy Chief Greg Long said firefighters had difficulty reaching the one-story, brick frame home due to the deep snow, and the extreme cold caused several pieces of equipment to freeze up. Hydrants were buried by snow, forcing firefighters to shuttle water from tankers. Long said the residents managed to escape and no injuries were reported in the 9 p.m. blaze. In addition to the Fort Ashby Volunteer Company, about a dozen other fire and rescue companies responded to the blaze, with assistance from the West Virginia Division of Highways, the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office and the National Guard.
