Allegany school board may choose contractor for stadium renovation

Discussion of president’s ‘Race to the Top’ program also on Tuesday agenda

CUMBERLAND — Members of the Allegany County Board of Education may vote Tuesday to choose a contractor to renovate Greenway Avenue Stadium, thus spending $2.6 million to $4.1 million io improve what many consider to be the best high school football complex in the state.

A public work session begins at 5 p.m. with a 7 p.m. business meeting, both at the Central Office on Washington Street.

The bids, which were opened Feb. 1, were:

• Roy C. Kline Contractors, Smithsburg, $2,597,167.

• Callas Contractors, Hagerstown, $3,234,000.

• Carl Belt Inc., Cumberland, $3,265,000.

• Brechbill and Helman Construction, Chambersburg, Pa., $3,439,000.

• Morgan-Keller Inc., Frederick, $3,467,000.

• Building Systems Inc., Hagerstown, $3,578,000.

• J.C. Orr & Son Inc., Altoona, Pa., $3,596,300.

• Waynesboro Construction Co., Waynesboro, Pa., $3,750,000.

• Palmer Construction, McConnellsburg, Pa., $3,970,000.

• Lashley Construction, Frostburg, $4,059,000.

Separate bidding took place for construction of a field house and bleachers.

Also at the meetings, Superintendent David Cox will discuss the continuing effort to apply for and become involved in President Barack Obama’s program “Race to the Top,” which provides competitive grants at the state and school district levels.

The money may be used to:

• Adopt more challenging standards that will prepare students for college and careers.

• Employ excellent principals and great teachers by developing and evaluating them and by rewarding their success.

• Implement cutting-edge data systems to track a student’s progress.

• Turn around some of the lowest-performing schools.

The board will also:

• Proclaim February as Black History Month.

• Recognize Beall, Flintstone, Northeast and South Penn elementary schools for achievement on the 2009 Maryland School Assessment.
