John “Fred” Rowe Sr. [Cresaptown]

CRESAPTOWN — John “Fred” Rowe Sr., 92, of Cresaptown, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center.

Born Jan. 12, 1918, in Frostburg, John was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Rowe and Mary (Stark) Rowe. John was also preceded in death by one brother, Ronald J. Rowe and one sister, Eleanor Lloyd. Fred was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Rowe retired as an engineer with Potomac Edison after 41 years of employement.

Fred was Methodist by faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran with the 101st Airborne Division, serving in World War II and Korea, and a member of Potomac Lodge 100 AF & AM. Fred also was a lifetime member of the Tall Cedars and Farrady Post 24 American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and his cats.

Mr. Rowe is survived by one son, John “Fred” Rowe Jr. and wife Susan, Cumberland; three daughters, Luanne Rowe Wiechert and husband Dave, Bedford, Pa., Terrie Lynn Lease, Glenn Oaks, and partner Cathy “Catbird” Wolford, and Mary Beth Weber and husband Stephen, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and their mother, Margaret Anderson, Cresaptown; four grandchildren, John “Fred” Rowe III, Victor C. Lease, Tyler C. Emerick and Paige Weber; and four great-grandchildren, John “Freddy” Rowe IV, Zachery Rowe, Jensen Lease and Jeremy Lease.

Fred’s body was cremated in accordance with his wishes.

Mr. Rowe’s ashes will be intered in the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Flintstone, on Monday at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will be held at the Cresaptown Eagles following the service.

Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard.
