OAKLAND — Henry F. Moomau, of Oakland, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, with his family by his side.
He was born on June 6, 1933, in Petersburg, W.Va., the son of William C. and Sara Taylor Moomau. He was also preceded in death by his son, Richard C. Moomau, his brothers William Moomau, George Moomau, Fred Moomau and Lewis Moomau and sisters Katie Thomas, Mary Clark and Margie Coffman.
He graduated from Petersburg High School where he excelled in basketball, football and baseball. He attended Potomac State College and WVU. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division, US Army stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., where in the two years of service he attained the rank of sergeant. He served as chairman of the Democrat Committee, Grant County, WV for many years. He established Potomac Engineering and Surveying in Petersburg and moved his business to Oakland. He worked with many coal companies as a mining engineer in the early phases of reclamation and long wall mining. He was instrumental in bringing VEPCO to Mount Storm, W.Va. He also was a successful developer in West Virginia and Maryland and farming was his passion. He and his wife shared their time between their homes in Kilmarnock, Va. and Oakland.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Norman, and her daughters, Kelly Norman and Lisa Wade; by his daughters, Sarah and her husband Robert Spanswick, Peggy and husband Jimmy Lascaris, Amy and husband Don Nemith, and Sue and husband John Foundas; son, Eric Moomau and their mother Betty C. Moomau; by his son, Adam Moomau; daughter Katelin and husband Matt Briney and their mother, Mikal McCartney; six grandchildren; and one sister, Sally King, of Warsaw, Va.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at 5 p.m. at the Loch Lynn Church of God, with the Rev. Anne Harrison officiating. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, the Oakland Volunteer Rescue Department or the charity of your choice.
