Frostburg housing project on front burner

Construction of Braddock’s Greene to get under way when weather warms

FROSTBURG — All that is needed for the start of construction of the Braddock’s Greene housing project is balmy weather, according to Frostburg City Administrator John Kirby.

The project will be built and managed by Woda Group, LLC, of Westerville, Ohio.

On Monday, Secretary Raymond A. Skinner of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development announced that federal stimulus money — aka American Recovery and Reinvestment Act — has put construction of the 50-unit, income-based housing project for seniors on the front burner.

There will be one- and two-bedroom apartments at Braddock’s Greene, to be built near the intersection of Braddock Road and Interstate 68 on Frostburg’s south side.

“The mayor and council and particulary Mayor (Arthur) Bond believe this to be a great project for Frostburg that will serve our active, lower-income seniors,” Kirby said. “We are looking forward to having Woda as a corporate neighbor.”

In addition to a $1,050,000 mortgage from Huntington National Bank, the project is financed with more than $6.3 million via a program that defers the developer’s fee of $334,569. Also, $250,000 from DHCD’s Elderly Rental Housing Program is being used.

The units will be available to those 62 or older with annual incomes between $16,600 and $33,240 for a two-person household.

Woda spokesmen have said that monthly rental fees will be $400 to $500.

“In addition to increasing the inventory of affordable rental housing for Maryland’s seniors, the Braddock’s Greene project also is a boost to Maryland’s labor market,” Skinner said. “Every job counts in this economy and we’re proud that this project will help create 48 construction jobs in Allegany County.”
