CUMBERLAND — A 12-year-old boy who was struck by a train Monday night was found by police more than three hours after his friend saw him trying to cross the tracks.
Police found the unidentified boy at 12:06 a.m. Tuesday near Queen City Drive. The Cumberland Fire Department transported him to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized. He was later taken to Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore for treatment of serious injuries, police said.
The boy's mother had reported the juvenile missing at 11:14 p.m. after the boy's friends were unable to locate him despite the fact that they were supposed to be together.
Officers began searching the area and also received a call from CSX regarding a possible body along the train tracks between Frederick and Baltimore streets. The officers checked the area and located the boy.
Police interviewed the boy's friends, who said that the boy and a second juvenile entered CSX property around 8:30 p.m. by going through a hole in the fence on Queen City Drive in order to cross the tracks to get to Henderson Avenue. A train was approaching and the boy tried to cross the tracks in front of the train, police were told. The other juvenile waited for a second train to go by before he crossed the tracks.
The second juvenile met up with some friends who had crossed the tracks using the underpass and together they were unable to find the boy. When they found that he hadn't arrived at their meeting place, they alerted the boy's mother.
CSX representatives responded to assist officers and the investigation is continuing.
