Recycled Christmas trees enhance fish habitat

CUMBERLAND — Local residents have the chance to recycle their live-cut Christmas trees, including to enhance fish habitat in an area lake.

Trees may be dropped off in Allegany County through Jan. 16 at the following locations:

• County Compost site on PPG Road

• Penn-Mar Recycling Center behind the County Office Complex on Kelly Road

• Flintstone Solid Waste Collection

• Frostburg ball field on Lower Consol Road

• Mountainview Landfill

• LaVale Lions Field

• Little Orleans Refuse Disposal

• Lonaconing Town Hall rear parking lot

• Mount Savage Park

• Oldtown Solid Waste Collection

• Westernport Town Garage

Trees can be taken to the compost site after Jan. 16. The winter hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Garrett County Solid Waste & Recycling Division will accept Christmas trees for recycling at the Garrett County Landfill during January and February.

The landfill is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3118 Oakland Sang Run Road.

Trees will not be accepted at the Grantsville Town Hall, Southern Athletic parking lot, or any of the refuse and recycling sites.

Christmas tree recycling is available to county residents free-of-charge. A residential disposal permit is not required to participate in this program or any other recycling program in Garrett County.

Christmas trees may also be recycled at home by placing cut branches and needles under trees and shrubs as a temporary winter mulch or by chopping them up and adding them to a compost pile.

Tinsel, garland and ornaments should be removed before recycling Christmas trees.

Live-cut Christmas trees also can be donated to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Youghiogheny River Lake to improve fish habitats.

The trees can be dropped off at the Jockey Hollow Launch Area gate one mile west of where U.S. Route 40 crosses the lake, at the Outflow Campground parking area closest to the outflow shower house or the Mill Ru Boat Launch through Jan. 16.

Decorations should be removed and trees should not be bagged.
