FROSTBURG — The Mountain City’s favorite cookies were crowned on Dec. 5 at the Frostburg Storybook Holiday cookie contest. This holiday event was sponsored by Frostburg State University’s Children’s Literature Centre, the City of Frostburg, Frostburg Department of Parks and Recreation and FrostburgFirst.
This year, the Mountain City award judges selected Danny and Zoe Welsch’s “Jodi’s Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie” for first place. The People’s Choice award was given to Sarah Hartman for her “Peanut Butter Blossoms.” Katrina Opel’s “Mrs. Claus’ Killer Cookies” were voted to be the Kid’s Choice winner. Follow the recipes below to include these award-winning cookies in your holiday baking this year.
Jodi’s Favorite Chocolate
Chip Cookie

1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup shortening
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups old fashioned oats
12 oz chocolate chips
Heat the oven to 325 degrees. Combine flour, salt and baking soda in mixing bowl and set aside. With mixer, beat shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating until light and fluffy. With mixer on low, add the flour mixture. Add the oats and fold in chocolate chips with a wooden spoon. Spoon tablespoon-sized balls onto cookie sheet and bake for 9-10 minutes.
Peanut Butter Blossoms

version)

Peanut butter cookie mix
Vegetable oil
1 egg
Water
Hershey’s kisses (wrapper removed)
Combine mix with wet ingredients as instructed on the package. Stir until combined. Roll into tablespoon-sized balls and place on cookie sheet. Bake in 350 degree oven for 8 minutes. When out of the oven, place a Hershey’s kiss on top of each cookie and refrigerate.
Mrs. Claus’ Killer Cookies

1 package yellow cake mix
2 eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup M&Ms;
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix cake mix and sugar. Add eggs, oil and vanilla to mix. Fold in M&Ms; and place spoonfuls on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 1-15 minutes or until golden brown.
