H1N1 vaccine date changed

KEYSER, W.Va. — The next H1N1 vaccine clinic to be offered by appointment only at the Mineral County Health Department will be Dec. 17. There will be no Dec. 18 clinic, but a clinic will be available Dec. 21.

Westernport water should be boiled

WESTERNPORT — The town of Westernport is issuing a precautionary boil-water advisory to residents and businesses served by its drinking water system.

This measure is being taken due to the Savage River Reservoir being drained to repair the gates.

The level of the water in the reservoir is extremely low and the town expects that very high raw water turbidity levels may be difficult to treat.

Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness of the water, and indicates whether the drinking water treatment is adequate.

Because of the possible deterioration of water quality, the town and the Maryland Department of the Environment recommend boiling water used for cooking and drinking for at least one minute until further notice.

For more information, call the Town Office at (301) 359-3932.

News clippings from the ’20s online

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce recently gave some archival material to Allegany College of Maryland, which in turn was made available to the Western Maryland Regional Library.

The scrapbook of press clippings from 1921 to 1923 includes articles from the Cumberland News, the Cumberland Times and The Baltimore Sun.

They cover many events in which the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce was the instigator or an active participant.

Stories cover a riot at a Barton mine; the need for a market and a library in Cumberland; a demand for increased funding of Normal School No. 2, now Frostburg State University; the arrival of Kelly-Springfield Tire; the new subdivision of Fort Hill; the need for an armory and a “flying field”; among many other stories.

The collection is now online at http://www.whilbr.org/CumberlandNews1921-1922/index .aspx.
