CUMBERLAND — Both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu vaccine will be available to the general public Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Allegany County Fairgrounds Multiuse Building.
Both shots can be received at the same time. Children under 10 require two doses of the H1N1 vaccine, administered at least 28 days apart. Those children who received their first dose of vaccine on or before Nov. 13 are eligible to receive the second dose at Friday’s clinic. Children whose first dose was received in mist form may receive injectable vaccine for their second dose.
Only injectable vaccine is being offered and there will be no pneumonia vaccines. The pneumonia shot is available Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. at the health department on Willowbrook Road.
While all residents are encouraged by health officials to consider being vaccinated against the flu viruses, those who are at high risk for serious health complications from the flu are strongly urged to get vaccinated as soon as possible. There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine. Seasonal flu vaccines are $30, payable by cash or check. Medicare and nongovernmental Blue Cross Blue Shield plans can be billed. Some plans require a referral for specialty care, which will be needed at the clinic.
Future H1N1 clinics will be scheduled as additional supplies of vaccine are received. For more information, log on to www.alleganyhealthdept.com or call the Influenza Hotline at (301) 759-5055.
