Board to discuss future of city secondary schools

CUMBERLAND — A group of about a dozen citizens will begin discussing the future of Allegany County’s secondary schools this evening as part of a several-month study of how to best accommodate children and the community.

The Community Resource Committee meets at 7 p.m. at the Center for Career and Technical Education. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be available for viewing via video streaming on the Allegany County Board of Education’s Web site, http://boe.allconet.org.

On Wednesday, the full Allegany County Board of Education will hear “preliminary data findings” from Eperitus, the Richmond, Va., educational firm that is conducting the study. That meeting, a work session that begins at 5 p.m., is also open to the public and was changed from the usual Tuesday date.

The task at hand is to determine future uses for Allegany and Fort Hill high schools, the Center for Career and Technical Education, and Braddock and Washington middle schools. Faced with declining enrollment and aging buildings, the board has to consider a variety of options, including consolidation.

The board hired Eperitus earlier this year to facilitate the study, which is expected to be completed in April.

Also Wednesday, the board will hear updates on fundraising efforts for the Greenway Avenue and Mountain Ridge stadiums during its 5 p.m. work session. The board’s regular monthly meeting follows at 7 p.m.
