Supermarket employees donate to United Way
CARLISLE, Pa. — Associates from Giant Food Stores and Martin’s Food Markets came together to raise a total of $994,430 in the companies’ 2009 United Way campaign. In addition, throughout the year, Giant and Martin’s associates at both the store and corporate level volunteered their time with United Way agencies across the stores’ operating areas.
The monies were distributed to United Way organizations across Giant and Martin’s market area
Devlin Manor names employee of quarter
CUMBERLAND — Chantel Moyer was named Devlin Manor’s employee of the quarter for the third quarter of 2009.
Moyer began her employment in March 2009 as a new graduate from the nursing aide program at the Allegany County Center for Career and Technical Education. She has been working as a geriatric nursing assistant since that time, earning her first Above and Beyond nomination shortly after hire. Co-workers nominated Moyer, with another nomination from a resident’s family member.
In her spare time, she likes to shop, and enjoys spending time with family and friends.
Moyer was acknowledged at the Oct. 28 ceremony, at which time she received a personalized parking space for the quarter, a certificate of appreciation, and a monetary gift.
Chamber’s next Business After Hours at visitors center
MCHENRY — The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce will hold the final Business After Hours networking event of the year at the McHenry Visitors Center on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Exhibitors include Friend Consulting, Think Outside, Friends of Deep Creek Lake, AXA Advisors, 1st Team, and MTS. Refreshment donations are being provided by Will O’ Wisp Resort, Mountain State Brewing, Savage River Lodge, Deep Creek Foodland Fresh Bakery & Deli and McHenry Beverage Shoppe.
In an effort to allow smaller member businesses an opportunity for additional participation, the 2010 Business After Hours events will be held at a central location in different communities throughout Garrett County.

Pilgrim’s Pride recognizes employee at Moorefield plant
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Denise Hose has been selected as the October Partner of the Month for the Pilgrim's Pride Moorefield fresh plant.
Hose works in the accounting department on day shift and has been employed with the company for 23 years.
“Denise has excellent attendance. She is very helpful to her co-workers, volunteering to assist them as needed. She has a great attitude. She always has a smile and treats people as she would like to be treated,” said Kathy Riggleman, Hose’s supervisor.
“Denise performs her job with great enthusiasm, making her a valuable asset to our department. She is very meticulous and meets deadlines with efficiency. She is always willing to learn new skills and strives to continuously improve her work. She is an excellent role model and always practices safe work habits,” said Riggleman.
Panelists will address real estate issues, industry trends
CUMBERLAND — A panel of experts from the fields of law, finance, inspection, brokerage and appraising will be available to answer questions about real estate issues on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Room 20 of the Continuing Education Building at Allegany College of Maryland.
Coldwell Banker Professional Real Estate Services is sponsoring a free session that is open to the public and is designed to address current real estate trends and questions. The panelists will be available to answer questions of general interest during the panel discussion and will be available for specific questions at the conclusion of the evening.
Coldwell Banker Broker Liz Skidmore learned about this concept during her recent trip to San Diego for the National Association of Realtors conference. “The information session is a new public service concept that has been effective across the nation because of all the recent changes in the real estate world,” said Skidmore. Blind employees benefit from Verizon Foundation grant
BALTIMORE — With a recent $24,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation, Blind Industries and Services of Maryland will purchase new adaptive technology, such as Braille displays, scanning software and Braille keyboards for blind and low vision adults and seniors participating in BISM’s rehabilitation programs.
BISM currently offers its Seniors Achieving Independent Living (SAIL) program in Baltimore, Cumberland and Salisbury. BISM also offers CORE, an intensive eight-month residential training program for adults, at BISM’s Baltimore location. Both curriculums provide comprehensive instruction in Braille, adaptive computer technology, cane travel and independent home living. BISM’s CORE and SAIL programs are free of charge for Maryland residents.
Next year, BISM’s Youth services division returns with “Independence 2010,” a summer residential program aimed at providing blind teens with the life skills to succeed in college, the workplace and at home.
BISM employs over 450 associates — the majority of whom are blind — and manufactures more than 150 products at its Baltimore, Cumberland and Salisbury facilities.
Appraiser certified in Maryland, West Virginia
CUMBERLAND — Bryan Klosterman, as the owner of Tri-State Appraisal Service, has been providing real estate appraisals in the Cumberland area for more than 20 years.
Klosterman, who has lived his entire life in the local area, is certified in both Maryland and West Virginia and has recently been updated in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Federal Housing Administration approved appraiser database to continue to provide FHA appraisals to local and national FHA lenders.

Initiative supports minority, women-owned businesses
GREENBELT — Gov. Martin O’Malley and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown have launched MBE University, an initiative to support Maryland’s minority- and women-owned businesses and to highlight the state’s MBE program. MBE University will serve as a traveling conference throughout Maryland to offer training, opportunities, and information on the tools necessary for minority or woman-owned businesses to expand, create jobs, and thrive even in difficult economic times.
