Charleston man arrested in city twice in one day

CUMBERLAND — Things went from bad to worse for a Charleston, W.Va., man who was arrested late Tuesday morning and a second time several hours later when he tried to retrieve his vehicle from the business where it was impounded.

Andre George Edwards, 20, was first arrested in a traffic stop on South Centre Street by Cumberland Police after he was allegedly speeding on westbound Interstate 68.

After a police search of his vehicle — a former, older-model West Virginia state police car — Edwards was charged with driving with his license privileges suspended and drug paraphernalia possession in addition to being given a warning for speeding.

Following the 10:30 a.m. arrest, Edwards was processed at the city Police station and released on his personal recognizance in a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon.

A few hours later, Cumberland Police investigated a suspicious person complaint at a towing business on West Offutt Street. Officers found Edwards inside the fenced area of the business before he reportedly ran and hid in a culvert near Canal Parkway. Officers took him into custody without incident. Edwards was armed with a BB gun at the time of his arrest.

Edwards reportedly told officers he had gone to the business in an effort to retrieve his vehicle.

He was charged with two counts of burglary, possession of burglary tools, trespassing on posted property, hindering and obstructing police, attempted theft less than $1,000 and possession of a BB gun in violation of a city ordinance.

Following a bond hearing, Edwards was jailed on $5,000 bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
