Water system may expand
Officials need commitment from potential Burlington customers
BURLINGTON, W.Va. — The Fountain Public Service District will hold a public meeting to discuss the possible expansion of the Burlington water system Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department.
Areas being considered for service include extension of lines on Knobley Road north and south of Ridgeville; Dry Run Road; Shirley’s Lane; Perrill Hollow Road; Patterson Creek Road north and south of Burlington; Ridge Road and Beaver Run Road. These proposed service areas may be increased or decreased based on the level of customer support.
In order for the project to proceed in any of these areas, the district must be able to document that at least 80 percent of the potential customers will take water service. Residents must complete a user’s agreement stating that they will accept service and commit to pay the minimum water bill or actual usage for a period of three years. If that level of interest is not demonstrated, the district will cancel any further work on the project.
The system will offer the area many benefits, including a safe water supply, fire protection and reductions in fire insurance premiums. Residents should consider their present costs to operate and maintain a well and water-softening equipment and supplies, if applicable. Often it costs more to operate a well system than to purchase water from a public system.
Current rates for the water system include a minimum bill of $30 for the first 3,000 gallons of use and $4.95 per 1,000 gallons for all use over 3,000 gallons. The average family uses approximately 4,500 gallons of water per month.
As an outcome of this meeting, the district wants to determine the level of support for this project and encourage residents to participate in an income survey to be conducted. The results of the income survey will be used to determine the type of funding assistance available to the project.
Residents who want to apply for water service may do so at the public meeting or at the Fountain Public Service District Office from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. A tap fee of $100 and security deposit of $50 will be charged when the application is filed. In the event the project does not go to construction, all fees will be refunded.
