Grants to improve water systems

CUMBERLAND — Water customers in three Allegany County communities will benefit from the latest round of grants approved by the Maryland Board of Public Works to reduce pollution and improve water quality.

Lonaconing will use a $300,000 grant to replace old water mains that serve the towns of Barton and Midland. The new water mains will minimize bacterial growth, improve esthetic quality and improve fire suppression to 1,525 homes.

A $250,000 grant will connect approximately 178 households in Bowman’s Addition to the city of Cumberland’s water distribution system. As a result, the current aging system will be retired and residents will have an improved water system.

The board, composed of Gov. Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot, approved $69.75 million in grants to help Maryland meet its two-year Chesapeake Bay cleanup milestones, which will more than double nutrient reduction goals by 2020, O’Malley said.
