Medevac logs first transport to new medical center

W.Va. car crash victim in serious condition

CUMBERLAND — A 37-year-old man injured in an accident in Purgitsville, W.Va., late Saturday was the first person transported by Maryland State Police medevac Trooper 5 to the new Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on Willowbrook Road.

The man’s vehicle traveled through a guardrail and enter-ed a stream. The victim was listed in serious but stable condition after being transported to the hospital. Burlington fire and ambulance volunteers also responded, according to State Police Cpl. Alex Kelly.

Early Sunday, the medevac helicopter based in Cumberland flew a 27-year-old man to the hospital after he reportedly fell 30 feet from a cliff in the woods near Little Orleans. He also was listed in serious but stable condition later in the day. Orleans and Flintstone emergency units also responded.

The medevac made its final transport to Memorial Hospital at about 2 a.m. Saturday after a 27-year-old man was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident in the Springfield, W.Va., area. Springfield fire and ambulance also responded.

He was the last patient transported by Trooper 5 to Memorial, which served as the area trauma center from 1981 until its closing Saturday, by the opening of the regional medical center.
