Bear Watch - November 22, 2009

From Staff Reports

Two confirmed road kills and two suspected ones have brought the highway mortality of bears in Maryland up to 39 for the calendar year, according to an unofficial count kept by the Cumberland Times-News.

On Nov. 2, a 175-pound female bear was found alongside Spring Lick Road in Garrett County.

On Nov. 4, one drainage away along Dry Run Road, a female of 300 pounds was discovered.

On Nov. 11, on Interstate 68 a half mile west of state Route 495 in Garrett County, a 121-pound female bear was struck and killed.

On Nov. 15, in Allegany County on state Route 36 two miles south of I-68, a male bear of 161 pounds perished.

Clarissa Harris of the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service said Wednesday that pregnant female bears and female bears with cubs will likely go to dens anytime. Male bears, on the other hand, are not expected to hibernate for another month or so.
