Hazel Haugh [Oldtown]

OLDTOWN — Hazel (Sherwood) Haugh, 83, of Oldtown, lost her battle with cancer on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at the Blue Ridge Hospice, Residential Center, Winchester, Va.

Born Feb. 8, 1926, in Keifer, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Alpha (Malcolm) Sherwood. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Sherwood and one nephew, “Hot Rod” Sherwood.

Mrs. Haugh graduated from Paw Paw High School and worked for Siebolds Grocery. Hazel worked for Grants Co., Crown, Cork & Seal for 18 years and was an Avon consultant. Hazel and her husband, Donald Haugh, were married on June 27, 1948, at the First Christian Church, Cumberland. She was an active member of Allegany County Homemakers for 52 years, Oldtown Volunteer Fire Department, Salvation Army and participated in their annual doll show. Hazel also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and Christian Fire Fighters and was active with the Paw Paw Senior Circle and Oldtown Historical Society. She was a member at the Winifred Road Church of Christ.

Her hobbies were collecting Avon and dolls. She loved and enjoyed crafting, reading, gardening and traveling to church related conventions, retreats, family camps and 5th Sunday Sings.

Hazel and Donald were foster parents for young people of the area of Allegany County.

Hazel is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald W. Haugh; one son, Kenneth W. Haugh, of Winchester, Va.; one daughter, Nancy Puffinburger and husband Greg, of Winchester; one foster daughter, Mary Riley and husband Mark, of Flemington, Pa.; three grandsons, Philip and Derek Puffinburger, and John Riley; one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Puffinburger, of Winchester; two brothers, Jessy and Betty Sherwood, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Melvin and Susie Sherwood, of Helmford, Ariz., and beloved cat FiFi.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dick Peer officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Delawder, Kevin Peterson, Kenny Haugh, Norman Sherwood, Larry Hook and Tony Stotler.
