New displays

Mountain Reflections opens tonight

Six new displays are featured in this year’s Mountain Reflections holiday light display at Rocky Gap State Park.

Sponsored by the American Red Cross, the outdoor light show will kick off tonight at 6 o’clock and continue from now through Jan. 1. The displays will remain open every evening until 9:30.

The new displays are a puppy in a Christmas package, an animated bell tower, a girl building a snowman, an animated juggling snowman, a candy cane gingerbread man and an animated Victorian man waving from his horse and surrey. Michelle Harris, community services director for the Western Potomac Chapter of Red Cross, said a few of the oldest displays were traded in so that the show would have a new, fresh look.“Many people think the show is the same every year, but that’s not true. We always have new displays and we always try to have new lighting and decorations.”

Another change this year is the absence of the park buildings that housed the volunteer snack shack. Bill Crawford, executive director of the local chapter, said Rocky Gap tore down the buildings and is in the process of building a replacement. For that reason, Mountain Reflections will be slightly smaller for this year only. There will still be concessions available, however, because the Rocky Gap Park volunteer team will use a trailer to sell snacks.

Not only is the Mountain Reflections display a fun holiday event, it is an important fund-raiser for the Red Cross. Tickets for the show can be purchased at the gate, and are still $7 for cars and personal vans. Rates are available for anyone who wants to bring a bus or other multiseat vans, and three-day passes and gift certificates will be on sale at the chapter. The chapter can be reached at (301) 722-1760 for questions about the event.
