FSU’s Winterling continues to reap honors

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Frostburg State University senior Brooke Winterling was named honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Tuesday, becoming the first AVCA All-American in the volleyball program’s history.

Last week, Winterling picked up three honors after being named to the AVCA Mid-Atlantic Region team and was selected as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Year for the third straight season. Winterling had also been namd to the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship Juniata Regional All-Tournament Team.

Winterling finished the season ranked second in the country in kills per set (4.79) and helped the Bobcats to 21st in the nation in kills per set (12.87). She led the AMCC and the Bobcats with 575 kills and is FSU’s career kills leader with 2,204. Winterling finished her Bobcat career with 1,100 digs and 161 service aces.

Winterling helped lead FSU to a 30-5 overall record, its third straight AMCC Tournament title and third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Raiders offer youth roller hockey program

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland Raiders will begin a youth roller hockey program for interested players ages 14 and under.

Practices will be held at the Moon-Glo Skating Rink, Bedford Road, on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. For more information, contact coach Pat Ferguson at (301) 724-9086.

Sawyers holding baseball camp Dec. 6

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Purdue University assistant baseball coach Ryan Sawyers will conduct a baseball camp Sunday, Dec. 6, at Shepherd University's Butcher Athletic Center. The camp will feature coaches from Purdue, West Virginia University, Creighton, Siena, Albany, Iona, St. Peter's, Shepherd and Shenandoah. There will be pitching, catching and hitting sessions available. Pitching/catching takes place in the morning and hitting will take place in the afternoon.

Chris Spielman’s wife dies at 42

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Stefanie Spielman, the wife of NFL and Ohio State star Chris Spielman who led a public fight against breast cancer, died Thursday after a lengthy battle with the disease. She was 42.

Stefanie Spielman died at the family’s home in Upper Arlington, surrounded be her family, said WBNS radio in Columbus, where Chris Spielman co-hosts a show.

“Stefanie has gone home to be with the Lord,” Chris Spielman said in a statement released by the station. “For that, we celebrate, but with broken hearts. I want to thank everyone for their support over the last 12 years. Together, with your help, hopefully we made a difference in this fight.”
