To the Editor:
Many opponents who are grasping for reasons to thwart health care reform are now asking, “Why are we rushing such massive reform through Congress?” Rushing through health care reform? Are they serious?
Health care reform has been on the table since President Teddy Roosevelt included it in his campaign platform in the early 1900s. For over a century, both Republicans and Democrats have been working to improve our health system. Notably, Republican President Richard Nixon started the modern movement in the 1970s.
Reform did not just “pop-up overnight,” it has been in the political conversation for decades. We have an opportunity to pass meaningful legislation now.
We can’t allow the status quo to continue for another century.
