Lawrence W. “Ike” Abe [LaVale]


LAVALE — Lawrence W. “Ike” Abe, 87, formerly of LaVale, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Frostburg Village Assisted Living.

Born April 25, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Clayton and Bernice (Buckley) Abe.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris “Dottie” Jean Abe, on Jan. 27, 1989; five brothers, Phillip, Aden, Rich-ard, Ivan and Robert Abe; and one sister, Edith Hedrick.

Mr. Abe was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS New Jersey.

Mr. Abe was formerly employed by the Celanese Corporation in the Plant Protection Department. He was retired from CSX, where he had been a boilermaker’s helper.

He was a member of LaVale Baptist Church, LaVale Lions Club, Fort Cumberland Post 13, American Legion, and a former member of the LaVale Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a member of the Bingo Committee.

He is survived by his son, Larry Abe and wife Lisa, Frostburg; two grandsons, Ryan Abe and Marc Abe, Frostburg; and one brother, Roger Abe and wife Marianne, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Hafer Funeral Service, P.A., Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Jim Jeffries officiating.

Interment will be in Zion Memorial Park, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Frostburg Village Assisted Living, 100 Village Parkway, Frostburg, MD 21532.
