Beulah Mae Alt Staggs [Cumberlad]

CUMBERLAND — Beulah Mae Alt Staggs, 91, of Cumberland, formerly of Keyser W.Va., went home to be with Jesus, carried by angels, with her children by her side, on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Golden Living Center.

Born Dec. 21, 1917, in Upper Tract, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles B. Alt Sr. and Etta F. (Shreve) Alt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Staggs; four brothers, Benjamin Alt, Ira Alt, Dayton Alt, and Robert Alt and one sister, Mabel Aldridge.

Beulah was a very special lady. During her nearly 92 years on this earth, she was a loving caring daughter, a beautiful homemaker and a wonderful parent and grandparent. Being one of ten children, she learned at an early age the importance of hard work and learned the skills of a unique salesperson. Beulah could sell snow to an Eskimo, she sold Air-Way vacuum cleaners, life insurance, handmade crafts, Sarah Coventry Jewelry, with which she earned top salesperson over the 25 years with the company. Beulah was an avid gardener and could grow beautiful vegetables and gorgeous Zinnias, double impatients, and the prettiest morning glories in Mineral County. She also was an experienced seamstress as well as a master of canning her veggies and making pickles. Beulah was also very active in her community. She served on the Republican Executive Committee for many years. During the elections, she worked at the voting polls and was very active in voter registration.

With all of the things that kept her busy, this very special lady found time, money, and most importantly room in her heart, to adopt three children and give them hope, happiness, and a home. We, the children, were the blessed ones. She chose to love us forever. Thank you mom for the wisdom you shared with us. Living in a large family through the war and the depression, Beulah knew the art of making ends meet and helping those in need. On the light side, Beulah never met a stranger, and was always ready with a joke. She loved bingo, Yatzee, and other games. She always won!

Surviving are her two daughters, Judy A. Paul, of Cresaptown, and Jeanette F. Mace and husband Tim, of Ridgeley W.Va.; one son, Michael Staggs, of Winchester, Va.; three sisters, Catherine Robinson, of North Carolina, Mary Neff, of Hot Springs, Va., and Ruth Fazenbaker and husband Jack, of Westernport; one brother, Charles B.
