Trio charged with jacklighting

FINZEL — On Oct. 31, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged three people with poaching violations near Finzel. Steven Andrew Durst, 22, Grantsville, Aaron Dean Wilburn, 19, Bittinger and Ashley Renee Baker, 23, Grantsville, were charged with casting the rays of light with a weapon in possession.

A .22 caliber weapon and spotlight were seized.

This charge is commonly called jacklighting. It illuminates the deer and inhibits it from moving, thus enabling the poacher to shoot the animal. The penalty for jacklighting is a fine not exceeding $2,000 and imprisonment not exceeding six months. Upon conviction, a person’s hunting license is revoked for two to five years and all evidence is forfeited.
