Clean, renewable energy offers the path to follow

To the Editor:

In Rick Webb’s letter entitled “Environmentalists ignoring long-term issues” on Nov 3, he addresses the need for alternative energy solutions in Virginia.

Although he is hesitant on location, I agree with Mr. Webb, wind technology is an important step in addressing our nations energy crisis.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act is an important step in the transition to a clean energy economy. The legislation sets requirements for generating electricity from renewable sources, like off shore wind, while also improving energy efficiency and making science-based cuts in global warming pollution.

We have enough wind off our coasts and on our mountain ridges to meet more than 25 percent of the commonwealth’s energy needs. Harnessing these winds means jobs for Virginians. Due to the fact that renewable energy tends to be more labor intensive more jobs will be created, and because of the technology used these are jobs that cannot be outsourced.

If we want to rebuild Virginia’s economy and move forward in a new direction then clean energy is the path we must follow.

As a resident of Virginia, I cannot wait to get these projects underway which is why I am calling on Senators Webb and Warner to support strong clean energy standards in the Senate.
