Bear Watch - November 8, 2009

Thirty-five bears have died on Maryland highways this year, according to the unofficial count kept by the Cumberland Times-News.

On Oct. 23, the remains of a male bear weighing 150 to 200 pounds was found on a Savage River State Forest access road off Lower New Germany Road. “It was possibly struck by a car and died away from the road,” said Clarissa Harris of the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service.

On Oct. 30, a 66-pound male bear was struck and killed in the middle of the day on U.S. 219 near Hoyes Road in Garrett County.
