Cats end season in Region XX tourney
HAGERSTOWN — Potomac State upset second-seeded Southern Maryland in its opening match, but later lost to top-seeded Hagerstown and Southern Maryland in the Region XX, Division II volleyball tournament over the weekend.
Kari Dancy and Krista Plummer were named to the all-tournament team for the Catamounts, who lost to only two teams all season — Hagerstown and Southern Maryland — and finished with a 25-4 record.
Dancy and Kelli Scott were named second-team All-Region XX, and Lauren Douthitt was honorable mention All-Region.
Only five teams participated in the Region XX Tournament, and the Cats began things by knocking off No. 2 Southern Maryland in a five-game battle, 20-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-22, 15-11.
In the winners bracket, Potomac State played the No. 1 seed, Hagerstown, and lost 25-15, 25-21, 25-16.
Southern Maryland won the rematch with PSC in three games, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17.
Hagerstown, ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA national poll, beat Southern Maryland in the final, which went five games, to earn a trip to the national tournament. It was the Hawks’ seventh straight Region XX championship.
For the weekend, Scott had 16 service points, seven aces, 28 kills, 36 digs and three solo blocks and six block assists, while Dancy had 12 points, four aces and 47 digs.
Plummer had 15 points, 23 digs and 77 assists, Alexis Ruths 23 points, eight aces and 26 digs, Douthitt 26 kills and 34 digs, Rachel Baldridge 22 kills, Tiffany Shank 16 kills and Bri Teets eight block assists.
PSC, in addition to going 25-4, won the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference regular-season and playoff championships, and the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association championship.
