Rose Mary Shaffer [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Rose Mary Shaffer, 96, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at the Allegany Health Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 24, 1913, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah A. and Teresa (Burkey) Counihan. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Edward H. Shaffer; one sister, Julia Wilson; five brothers, Leo Counihan, James Counihan, Francis Counihan, Thomas Counihan and Joseph Counihan, and one son-in-law, Joseph A. Yockus.

Mrs. Shaffer was a homemaker and a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was always there for her family and many friends. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are four daughters, Patricia A. Souza and husband Jim, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Michele M. Puderbaugh and husband Richard, of Cumberland, Roberta “Bobbie” L. Bowen and husband Dan, of Hendersonville, N.C., and Jacquelyn R. Yockus, of Cumberland; one son, James E. Shaffer and wife Rebecca, of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Rick Ashley and wife Lucy, Debbie Cabebe and husband Raymond, Lisa Ashley and husband Duane, Christa Ashley, Rich Puderbaugh and wife Brenda, Rose Puderbaugh and husband Robert Wilt, Mary Miller and Phillip Kessel, Laura Morris and husband Curt, Jason Avery and wife Bettina, Blaine Avery, Christopher Shaffer and wife Kelley, Michael Shaffer and wife Katherine, Stefanie Shaffer, Scott Yockus, Mark Yockus and wife Thea and Ryan Yockus and wife Melanie, and Patricia A. Souza and husband Jim; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with Father Bernard as celebrant.

Interment will be in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery.
