Westernport man charged in shooting incident

Accused jailed on $50,000 bond

WESTERNPORT — A Philos Avenue man was jailed Monday afternoon after he allegedly fired shots in the direction of a Lonaconing couple who were in his driveway during a disturbance, according to the Westernport Police Department.

John F. Comeau, 48, was charged with two counts each of attempted second-degree murder and reckless endangerment and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia following the 1 p.m. incident.

Following the on-scene arrest, Comeau was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center where he remained jailed Tuesday on $50,000 bond after a district court bail review.

Sgt. Joshua Wengerd said Comeau allegedly fired four shots from a .22-caliber long rifle but no one was struck by the shots and there were no injuries.

Police said the incident was apparently the result of an ongoing dispute and that Comeau had fired the shots in an attempt to “scare away” the victims from his residence.

The rifle was seized as evidence after police found it inside Comeau’s residence with a round in the chamber.

Maryland State Police and an off-duty Allegany County Bureau of Police officer also responded to the incident, which was initially reported as a “disturbance with shots fired.”
