Route 219 widened at Oakland location

OAKLAND — Travellers on U.S. Route 219 in Oakland may find the road safer and easier to use with the addition of a center left turn lane.

The lane, located between Walmart and Lake Street, is intended to improve left turning access for businesses along that stretch of roadway.

Work on the lane began around 9 p.m. Wednesday and continued through Thursday morning.

The road itself wasn’t widened. Instead, the lanes were made bigger by extending them to the shoulder.

According to Geoff McCammon with the Maryland State Highway Administration, the work was recently requested by the town of Oakland.
