I am writing in regards to a theft that occurred at my home on Shriver Avenue on Oct. 16, somewhere between the hours of 9 and d

Someone entered my back yard, came onto my porch and stole my 8-year-old son’s brand-new 20-inch Mongoose bicycle that had been riden one time.

Not only is my son heart broken, but I (his mother) am “sick” about the whole incident. The bike was an early birthday present that was sent to him from his father, who is currently serving in the United States Army and is on active duty in Afghanistan.

To many people, the bike may not have great monetary value, but to us there is no limit on the sentimental value the bike has to my son and our family.

I hope the person who stole my son’s bike reads this and thinks about the man who is sacrificing his time away from his children to protect people like you.

It’s bad enough that he can’t be here on my son’s birthday, but now the joy of knowing how happy his son was when he received that bike has been stolen as well!

What is wrong with people? Why do many of us have such a lack of respect for one another and their property to think that’s it’s OK to just come to someone’s home and steal from them. I often wonder what kind of person would steal a bicycle from a child — one that is truly pathetic that’s who!

Unfortunately, I bought a bike lock that evening but I wasn’t fast enough — the thief beat me to it before I could get it locked up. I have filed a report with the Cumberland Police Department and the officer who responded was very sympathetic, but realistically I know the chances are slim to none that we’ll ever get the bike back.

It’s a sad sad world that we live in!
