Bosnian who received medical treatment

CUMBERLAND — Maja Kazazic, the Bosnian girl who received medical treatment in Cumberland in 1993 after losing her leg that was struck with shrapnel during the Bosnian civil war, is the subject of an article in the October issue of “Reader’s Digest.”

Written by Jennifer Rawlings and photographed by Ron Haviv, the article describes the fruition of Kazazic’s pledge to a dying cousin years ago to swim with a dolphin, something the 5-year-old cousin Jasmina, who died from leukemia, always wanted to do.

Kazazic, now 32, whose left leg was amputated because of her injuries, wore a prosthetic leg and swam with the injured bottlenose dolphin in Florida. The dolphin was wearing a prosthetic tail.

According to Rawlings’ story, Kazazic spent two years in the hospital in Cumberland. She was 16 when she arrived in Maryland.

A number of Bosnian children with war injuries were brought to Cumberland by Veterans for Peace so that they could receive medical treatment.
