Cumberland Theatre gallery spotlights artist John David

Collection of paintings portrays William Shakespeare, cast of his contemporaries

CUMBERLAND — Cumberland Theatre’s Lobby for the Arts Gallery is featuring an exhibition of paintings by artist John David to coincide with the production on stage of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged.”

The group of paintings portrays not only William Shakespeare himself, but an entire cast of his contemporaries. David uses Old Masters techniques and an intensity of vision where all things are not quite as they seem.

David’s paintings are in many private and public collections in the United States and Europe. He is also a mural painter and his work can be seen in the Chrysler Building and at the Association of the Bar in New York City. Born and raised in New Jersey, David now resides in Keyser, W.Va.

An Opening Night/Meet the Cast and Artist Party will be held today after the 8 p.m. show. The production and art exhibition will run until Oct. 25.

Tickets may be obtained by calling the box office at (301) 759-4990. Other details are available online at www.cumberlandtheatre.com.
