Garrett’s ‘Most Beautiful’ a couple this year
OAKLAND — Garrett County’s newest Most Beautiful Person is actually Garrett County’s Most Beautiful People, husband and wife Fredolen and Amelia Wolf of Deer Park, who were chosen for the honor from a group of seven nominees.
“I’m surprised, shocked,” a tearful Amelia said following the presentation at Tuesday’s public meeting of the Garrett County Commissioners. Fredolen was in LaPlata on business.
“He’ll be calling,” Amelia said of her husband. “I tell him the news.”
Sandy Bell, who nominated the Wolfs, wrote that Amelia has made thousands of bon bons and Easter eggs and donated all the profits to Cindy’s Fund, a local effort that helps Garrett County residents who have cancer.
Fredolen delivered the candy throughout the county. In the most recent fundraising year, the Wolfs donated $14,000.
“I didn’t know who would win. There are so many people who were nominated who have done wonderful things,” Amelia said.
Amelia said she makes the candy in her kitchen, sometimes with the help of her 85-year-old sister from Baltimore.
Tearfully, she recalled friends and acquaintances who had died from cancer, including, Dave Martin, clerk of the Garrett County Circuit Court, whom she described as her boss.
The Wolfs are members of the Loch Lynn Church of God where Amelia sends out greeting cards to members who are sick or are having birthdays.
She goes daily to a local nursing home to feed her mother-in-law and cleans her brother’s house each week.
In nominating the Wolfs, Bell wrote, “I cannot express enough how deserving Fredolen and Amelia are of this award. They have contributed so much to our county.”
Other nominees for the annual award were Doug Riley of Oakland, Charles Nolan of Deer Park, Lance Rhodes of Swanton, Karen Myers of Swanton, Anne Bell-Boltz of Mountain Lake Park and Betty Wolford of Mountain Lake Park.
A committee of six reviews the nominations and selects the winner.
