Head-on U.S. 220 crash injures 4

From Staff Reports

CRESAPTOWN — A three-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 220 sent four people to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on Tuesday morning, according to the Allegany County Bureau of Police.

Christopher Stouffer, 24, Wiley Ford, W.Va., was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier northbound at 8:48 a.m. just below Louise Drive when he crossed the center line and struck a pickup truck heading south, police said.

Aaron Brooke Gray of Cumberland lost control of the pickup and hit a 2003 Toyota sedan being driven north by Cynthia Erzkus, 57, Cumberland.

Several people were trapped briefly in their vehicles, police said.

Stouffer was charged by the Bureau of Police with failure to drive right of center. He and two passengers were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Erzkus was taken to the hospital but her passenger was not injured. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, police said.

Victims were taken in four ambulances by Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department, LaVale Rescue Squad and Cumberland Fire Department, according to the Allegany County 911 center.

The roadway was closed for 45 minutes and State Highway Administration responded and treated the road for spilled fluids, according to a 911 dispatcher.

Bowling Green and Rawlings volunteer fire departments also responded.
