WELLERSBURG, Pa. — Firefighters from six volunteer units brought under control an early morning house fire on Saturday just north of Wellersburg in Somerset County.
Keith Sturtz, second assistant chief with the Wellersburg District Volunteer Fire Company, said no one was hurt in the 1:20 a.m. emergency call on the two-story dwelling at 6407 Cumberland Highway.
“There was no one living there,” Sturtz said. “It is suspicious at this time. The burn patterns looked to me like it was started on the outside of the house.”
“It’s a totally gutted house,” he said.
Sturtz said fire investigators are expected at the scene on Monday.
He estimated the loss of the dwelling between $150,000 and $175,000.
“We did an interior attack with knockdown with the help of the other companies,” Sturtz said. “We had it under control in probably a half hour.”
Firefighters remained on the scene for about three hours. The property owners were notified of the incident and arrived at the scene after the fire was under control, Sturtz said.
Volunteer fire companies from Meyersdale, Mount Savage, Ellerslie, Clarysville and Eastern Garrett also responded to the scene.
