Rabies clinics set in Garrett County
OAKLAND — The Garrett County Health Department will hold its last series of low-cost rabies clinics this year for the vaccination of cats, dogs and ferrets from Sept. 21 through 26.
Weekday clinic hours are 5 to 6 p.m.
• Monday, Grantsville Elementary School.
• Tuesday, Swanton Community Center.
• Wednesday, Crellin Elementary School.
• Thursday, Friendsville Elementary School.
• Friday, Kitzmiller Fire Hall.
• Saturday, Garrett County Health Department, 10 a.m. to noon.
The vaccination costs $5 per animal. Dogs must be on a leash, and cats and ferrets must be in a cage, box or cloth sack.
Animals 3 months and older may be vaccinated, and state law requires those 4 months old and up to be vaccinated. Failure to vaccinate pets may be punishable by a fine of up to $500 per animal.
County dog and cat licenses will be available.
Iron Rail Days 5K run will affect traffic
MOUNT SAVAGE — The Iron Rail Days 5K run and 1-mile run/walk scheduled for Saturday in Mount Savage will cause motorists to experience minimal, temporary traffic delays through the town.
Both events begin at 8:30 a.m. on Foundry Row by the former Union Mining Co. building near Mount Savage Community Park. After running on Foundry Row and Iron Rail Street by the Mount Savage Volunteer Fire Department, participants will cross a pedestrian bridge and head toward state Route 36.
The 5K runners will travel northwest along Route 36 for about one-fourth of a mile before crossing the state roadway by the Mount Savage Post Office and head onto New School Road. One-mile runners and walkers will cross Route 36 immediately after leaving the pedestrian bridge.
There will be no road closures. Allegany County Bureau of Police officers will handle traffic control during the event, which is expected to last about one hour and be off state roads after 30 minutes. The rest of the route is conducted on county and residential roads through Mount Savage before ending near the half-unearthed iron furnace by Old Pioneer Park.

Dinner will benefit Northern High FFA
ACCIDENT — A spaghetti dinner to benefit the Northern Garrett High School FFA will be held Sept. 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
The organization is raising money for 12 students to attend the national convention in Indianpolis, where the public speaker and meats evaluation team will compete for national honors.
The menu includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, texas toast, dessert and drink.
The price is reduced for children 12 years old and under.
City schedules street improvements
CUMBERLAND — Improvements will begin Monday on Bedford Street between High Bedford Street and Henderson Avenue and on Baltimore Street between Park Street and Ridgeway Terrace, according to Cumberland Engineering Department and Belt Paving.
Traffic patterns will change and possible street closings and detours will be in place. Detour signs will assist the public around the street closures.
Street improvements will begin on Frederick Street between Mechanic Street and Centre Street in the near future.

Garrett school board to meet Tuesday
OAKLAND — The Garrett County Board of Education will hold a special meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m. at its office on South Second Street to discuss the fiscal 2009 audit.
Beall 1940 grads will meet today
CUMBERLAND — The 1940 graduating class of Beall High School will meet today at noon in the Community Room at Martin’s Food Markets, 739 Park St., Cumberland.
