Allegany County Habitat for Humanity earns official status
FROSTBURG — Allegany County Habitat for Humanity has received its official affiliate status and is ready to move forward with recruiting board members and volunteers.
The Christian-based organization will be taking applications from individuals and families who need help building a home once enough money is raised for half the cost of the project. Each home costs about $65,000 and recipients have 20 years to pay back the no-interest mortgage. They also must contribute at least 300 hours to construction of the home.
Volunteers are needed for fundraising and recruiting two new board members. People are also needed to serve on the partnership, church relations, construction, site selection, family selection and family support committees.
The organization is also seeking donations of office supplies, including a desk, chair, computer, printer and overhead projector.
The homes can be located anywhere in Allegany County, so donated or low-cost land is also being sought.
All homes built will be basic using an already approved floor plan.
Community businesses and individuals will be asked for monthly donations and/or yearly pledges to reach the fundraising goal.
Savage River Lodge will hold a traditional barbecue Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. as a fundraiser for the effort. Lodge owners Jan Russell and Mike Dreisbach were on the original founding Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity in Washington County. In the spring of 2007 they made a commitment to raise enough money to build a home in Garrett County. In less than two years, they presented a check to Doug Riley, Garrett County affiliate president, for $42,000.
An annual picnic for their Lodge Club members raised $440 in July for Allegany County Habitat for Humanity and they hope to raise $10,000 with the barbecue event. To purchase a ticket, call (301) 687-1006. For more information, log on to www.savageriverlodge.com.
The Home Builders Association of Western Maryland will donate a portion of the proceeds from its annual golf tournament Aug. 21 at Fore Sisters Golf Course to Allegany County Habitat for Humanity. For more information, call (301) 722-4343.
Habitat presenters are available to speak to local organizations.
Future plans include opening a REstore to sell new and gently used building supplies that are donated by people in the community.
Board members are Kathy Miller, president; Anthony Crosby, vice president; Ashley Sowers, secretary; Shauna McQuade, treasurer; and Terri Lowery, John Rowley, David Fell, Melissa Watson, Mary Moran, Lisa Rocks, Doug McKenzie, Deborah Grimm and George Lapp.
The Habitat for Humanity office is located at 33 E. Main St. in Frostburg.
