A Frostburg State University football player who collapsed during practice last week has died, university officials said Monday.
Derek Sheely, a senior history and political science major, died late Sunday night at Baltimore’s R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, FSU President Jonathan Gibralter said in a campus e-mail. Sheely collapsed after being escorted from the field during practice on Aug. 22.
A native of Germantown, Sheely was the starting fullback for the Bobcats and was named to the Atlantic Central Football Conference’s 2010 All-Academic team, FSU officials said.
“Coach Rogish told me that Derek was one student he never had to worry much about because he excelled both in the classroom and on the he football field,” Gibralter said in his note.
Information about funeral arrangements and an on-campus memorial will be released as it becomes available.
Sheely’s family thanked the campus community for its thoughts and prayers and encouraged people to go to Derek’s Facebook page to post condolences.
“We’re incredibly proud of Derek,” the family said in an e-mail to Gibralter, which he shared. “He’s all one could hope for to have in a son/brother and more. He’s never run from a challenge and he fought with with everything he had.”
