Charles A. “Shorty” Smith Sr. [Rawlings]

RAWLINGS — Charles Anthony “Shorty” Smith Sr., 75, of McMullen Highway, Rawlings, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at his home.

Born July 3, 1934, in Knolo, Pa., he was the son of the late Lester C. and Dorothy Smith. A son, David Wayne Smith, a sister, Dot Ault, a brother, Lester “Pete” Smith, and a grandson, Shawn Smith, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith retired from Westvaco with 33 years of service, having worked in the finishing department. He was a member of Luke Local 676, and a member of the Mountaintop Ringer Slingers. He was also a state champion archer. Mr. Smith participated in the old Tri-Towns Softball League, his passion at that time, where he was a league MVP and pitching MVP. He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman.

He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Betty J. (Marple) Smith; four sons, Charles “Butch” Smith Jr. and wife Darlene, of Westernport, Lester “Jim” Smith, of Cumberland, Gary “Bunky” Smith, of Keyser, W.Va., and Richard “Pug” Smith and wife Pam, of Piedmont, W.Va. He is also survived by his special loves and joys of his life, his grandchildren and great-grandkids, Joshua Smith, Jodi Fazenbaker and husband James, Justin Smith and wife Leslie, Whitney Smith, Jessica Smith, Tandi DeLawder and husband “Bubba,” Amy Smith, Scotty Smith, Cory Smith, Derrick King; great-grandkids, Emmit Fazenbaker, Lexi and Austin Smith. A lifelong friend, Joseph L. Smith, and his son, little “Joey,” of Bedford, Pa., also survives him.

The family received friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Marple officiating.

Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser, W.Va.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Joshua, Justin, Scotty, Cory, Derrick, and James.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Tri-Towns Little League, Westernport.
