FLINTSTONE — Dr. Giovanni Mastrangelo, 72, Oldtown, died Friday, apparently from injuries he sustained when jumping from the burning vehicle he was driving on Flintstone Creek Road, according to Maryland State Police.
Tfc. R.W. Yaniga reported that Mastrangelo was northbound on that road shortly after 3:30 p.m. and was approaching Black Valley Road when a large fire erupted in the bed of his 1997 Dodge 1500. The fire, with an unknown origin, was intense, Yaniga reported, causing the rear window to collapse into the vehicle and burn the driver.
Mastrangelo is said to have jumped from the moving automobile and landed on the road surface. The vehicle continued north for 50 yards before stopping against a guardrail.
Also responding were C3I/CST, Maryland state fire marshal, Fintstone fire and ambulance squads.
The investigation is being continued.
