Collision with bus kills driver

23 Garrett students sent to hospital

MCHENRY — An Accident man was killed Wednesday when his vehicle collided with a Garrett County school bus loaded with children.

Robert Charles Biers, 63, was operating a 1998 Ford pickup truck northbound on Garrett Highway near Keller Road when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a 2005 Thomas school bus being operated southbound by Samuel Jackson Thomas, 64, also of Accident, according to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office.

Biers was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:45 p.m. accident, police said.

Twenty-three juvenile passengers were aboard the bus, and all were transported to Garrett Memorial Hospital for examination of possible injuries. The Garrett Division of Communications reported through a news release that the bus driver and one student were transported by ambulance, and the remainder of the students were taken by school bus.

The accident remains under investigation.

Also responding to the accident were Maryland State Police, Northern and Southern rescue squads, Accident and Deep Creek volunteer fire departments and the State Highway Administration.
