Two Garrett churches hit by burglars

Thieves ransack houses of worship in likely search for money

OAKLAND — Thieves entered and damaged the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church on Broad Ford Road and the Oak Park Church of the Brethren on Church Lane late Thursday or early Friday, according to the Garrett Bureau of Investigation.

In addition, an unsuccessful attempt was made to enter St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Fourth Street where the main door was damaged.

The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office said the two victim churches were ransacked with damages resulting to interior doors, door frames and jambs. The perpetrators apparently were seeking money, although none was present in any of the three locations.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incidents or who may have noticed suspicious activity at the churches to call the sheriff’s office at (301) 334-1911.
