Harvest Festival planned Oct. 26

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Association of Student Councils will sponsor a Harvest Festival for Kids in the old gymnasium of Fort Hill High School on Oct. 26 from 2 to 5 p.m.

A nominal admission fee will be charged and light refreshments will be available. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes as there will be games, music and a costume contest.

Half of the proceeds raised at the event will be donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The remainder of the proceeds will be used to fund a trip to a leadership conference in Ocean City for participating association students.

Schools are in the process of gathering clothing donations that will be available at the Harvest Festival free of charge.

City planning group meets

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland Planning Commission will meet Monday at 4 p.m. in City Hall.

Agenda items include the commission’s annual report and meeting and application schedule, GAP Self-Storage site plan and an update of subdivision regulations.

City Planner David Umling will report on a letter received from the Shade Tree Commission concerning the Lila Estates subdivision.

Piedmont city officials to meet

PIEDMONT, W.Va. — The Piedmont mayor and council will meet Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the City Office.

Members of the public may call (304) 355-2621 before noon that day to place their name on the agenda.

Students win state art contest

CUMBERLAND — Two of Cumberland’s home-schooled students were honored as winners in the Maryland Judiciary Conflict Resolution Day Student Bookmark Art Contest.

Dorrah Speis, fifth grade, placed second for grades kindergarten through five. Atticus Speis, seventh grade, tied for first place among sixth- through eighth-graders.

The students were invited to a reception in Annapolis with Chief Judge Robert Bell at the Maryland Court of Appeals.

Prizes ranged from $25 to $75 and three to five entries may be selected to print as bookmarks.
