Garrett Mentors is a program worth supporting

When we retired to Oakland from Annapolis seven years ago, we knew we were coming to live in a special place. Because my husband’s family was originally from Cumberland and Oakland, and we had vacationed here for many years, it was somewhat familiar to us.

We soon discovered that Garrett County is Mountain Maryland, Four Seasons Resort, Deep Creek Lake, Autumn Glory Festival, and great community spirit with compassionate and dedicated volunteers.

One group stands out. Garrett Mentors Inc., is Garrett County’s premier, not-for-profit mentoring program, which provides children from kindergarten through fifth grade with a mentor who has weekly contact with the child, is a friend, a good listener, and provides school support where needed.

Garrett Mentors “Inspire by Example” as they instill the importance of good grades and higher learning, share their knowledge and experiences, teach skills needed to succeed in life, provide stability, instill values, build confidence and self-esteem, help the child discover their strengths, set goals and achieve dreams.

The mentor and child share new experiences and develop a closer bond through planned activities during the year. Studies have shown that attendance, grades, attention in class, and overall attitude toward learning all improve because of this program

Currently there are 40 children receiving the benefits of the mentoring program in six schools. The program, supported by the principals, teachers, counselors, and parents, is looking to expand and be present in every elementary school in the county.

We hope that all the terrific folks in Garrett County will join us in supporting the director, the board, the mentors and the Study Buddies as they begin a new school year of lunching and learning together.

For information about the program, contact Tricia Cheesman at (301) 387-5437. Garrett County — a special place with special people who care for one another. How very fortunate we are to live here!
