Catamounts win golf opener

MCHENRY — Brendan Dillon and Mike Stenger shot 76s and Potomac State golfers filled the top seven spots in a season-opnening Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Kickoff Tournament held at the Wisp Resort.

The Catamounts had a team score of 307 in beating six other squads. Dillon, a sophomore, and Stenger, a newcomer, led the field with their 4-over par 76s. Brian Affleck was next with a 77, and Matt Pellillo and Luke Dempsey were next with 78s.

With five scores in the 70s, the Catamounts won in convincing fashion by 65 strokes. Butler County Community College was runner-up. The top score not posted by a PSC golfer was Scott Goodfellow, of Westmoreland, who was eighth with an 84.

“Overall I was very pleased,” said Potomac State coach Aaron Edwards. “We really could not have had more balanced scoring, and if that continues, we will post some really good scores this season.

“The new layout at the Wisp is a really nice one, but also has made the course much harder. The staff at the resort had the course looking great, and I could not ask for a better place to co-host the opening event. My guys posted some good scores, but the course really played hard, and we were happy to get out with a solid start to the season."

The Catamounts travel to Apollo, Pa., to take on Penn State-New Kensington today.
