Kim Leonard receives highest volunteer award in Scouting

CUMBERLAND - Kim Leonard, president of Potomac Council 757 Boy Scouts of America, has been named a Silver Beaver Award winner.

The Silver Beaver is the highest volunteer award bestowed by a local Scouting council. In nominating Leonard for the award, Jeffrey Hutter Sr. said that he has "consistently exerted his leadership potential for the good of the community."

"He turned the tide for our local program and led us to achieve quality council two years in a row," Carl Belt Jr. said.

A local businessman and community leader, Leonard has been active in Scouting since his youth, when in 1961 he earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. He served as a member of the Potomac Council Board of Directors for many years and as president since 2006.

Leonard has invested considerable time and effort to lead the council to increased membership, program services and greater financial stability, according to the council.

His lengthy list of honors includes a Bronze Star for service in Vietnam, Individual of the Year and Small Business of the Year with the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, and the Dapper Dan Community Service Award.

Leonard also serves as chairman of the Allegany College of Maryland Board of Trustees, president of The Greater Cumberland Committee, treasurer of the Western Maryland Health System Board and is past president of the Cumberland Rotary Club.
