Requests come in for hotel/motel revenue

Frostburg channeling some money into Glendening Recreational Complex

FROSTBURG — Representatives of various organizations lined up at the microphone at the public meeting of the Frostburg mayor and council, seeking funds from the city’s share of the hotel/motel tax revenue.

“We have about $150,000 in revenue from the tax,” said City Administrator John Kirby. “A portion of it goes to pay off our debt for the Glendening Recreational Complex and some is used to support our Recreation Department, because a lot of what that department does is related to tourism.”

The single largest request, $26,000, came from Andrea DePalatis on behalf of FrostburgFirst and the Main Street Program.

Speaking proudly of the program, DePalatis told the elected officials Thursday evening that it had survived two hurdles that have killed Main Street programs in other communities, including making it past the three-year mark and undergoing a change of directors.

The program, in its fifth year, is now managed by Jerilyn Jackson, who replaced Karin Tedesco.

Sean Henry, representing the board of directors for the Frostburg Museum, asked for $6,000 for that facility.

“You wouldn’t recognize the museum,” Henry told the group. “There has been more done there during the past year than during the past 30 years combined,” he said.

Henry said the museum is attempting to acquire the Braddock Stone, the rock marker engraved during the Gen. Edward Braddock years in Western Maryland which indicated distances to various structures and landmarks. Henry said at least some of the money would be used to build a home for the stone.

Other requests for the hotel/motel tax revenue came from:

• Frostburg Palace Theatre, $5,000.

• Allegany Arts Council, $3,000.

• Appalachian Festival, $2,000.

• House and Garden Club, $1,500.

• Cruisin’ Main Street, $1,000.

• Frostburg Arion Band, $500.

• Western Maryland Wheelmen, $250.

Kirby said the city will continue to accept requests through its public meeting March 20.

Other allocations of the tax revenue include:

• $1,000 for Christmas decorations.

• $5,000 to maintain the Allegheny Highlands Trail head.

• $1,000 to buy hay for stopping soap-box cars on Derby Day.
