Astronomy Club to have eye on sky Saturday in Frostburg

FROSTBURG - The Cumberland Astronomy Club will have its September Stars in the Park public observing session Saturday at Soccer Field 7 in the Parris Glendening Recreation Complex.

The first bright objects to be seen will be the moon and the planet Jupiter. Observing will begin around 8 p.m. and last until approximately 11 p.m. If skies are cloudy, the session will be canceled.

As the moon sets in the west, observers can look towards the southeast for the distant planet Uranus, which appears as a tiny blue disk in the telescope. Rising in the northeast is the great Andromeda Galaxy, which at a distance of about 2.5 million light years is the Milky Way's nearest galactic neighbor. Visitors are encouraged to bring a digital camera to snap photos of the moon through a telescope's eyepiece.

The recreation complex is located past Frost Elementary School off Rynex Avenue. For more information, log on to http://antoine.frostburg.edu/phys/luzader/cac or call Steve Luzader at (301) 689-1976 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
