Thieves enter scenic railroad cars, steal pickup

RIDGELEY, W.Va. - A $1,000 reward is being offered for information concerning the break-in of two coach cars and theft of a pickup truck from the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad property.

The shop property located near the Ridgeley ball field along the Potomac River flood wall was entered sometime after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Once inside the shop area, coach car No. 540 was forcibly entered to gain access to coach car No. 200, where a gift shop is located, according to Frank Fowler, general superintendent of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

Once inside car 200, various items and 50 cases of soda were stolen. "They cleaned out the gift shop," said Fowler.

A 1993 red Chevrolet pickup truck displaying Maryland registration 70N331 was also stolen. The truck is owned by the scenic railroad.

Fowler estimated the loss in destruction to the coach cars and theft of items and vehicle at $10,000.

The incident was discovered by an employee reporting to work Wednesday. The matter is being investigated by Ridgeley Police Department.

Anyone with information in the case may call Ridgeley Police at (304) 738-9400.
